A numbered list adds sequential numbers or letters in front of each item in the list.
A bulleted list adds dots or other similar designs instead.

You might want to use bullets to present a list of items in which the order of the items does not matter. You would use numbering to present procedural steps or items in a list that follow a specific order. It is important to understand that before using this type of formatting, your text must be typed in list form - that is, each item or sentence on a new line.
