An equation takes numbers and uses math processes such as addition and subtraction to find the result.

For example, 1+3 is an equation that adds two numbers together. The result of that equation is 4.

In a spreadsheet, mathematical equations are called formulas.

You can use equations in a spreadsheet to add up the contents of cells, subtract the values of cells from other cells, sort the data in cells, or many other things.

Many equations in spreadsheets use parentheses ( ) in them. Numbers inside the parentheses are calculated first, instead of doing the equation in order from left to right.

You'll use a formula to find the result of an equation soon.
