At his friend’s birthday party, some kid ate six bags of Pop Rocks —
those candies that fizz and pop in your mouth. He also drank quite a
bit of Coca-Cola. The carbonation from both the candy and the soda mixed
in his stomach, causing an explosion — and killing him instantly.
Afterward, Pop Rocks were pulled from the shelves.
Pretty gruesome stuff, right? It’ll make you think twice
before
washing your fizzy candy down with an ice-cold Coke, even though no one
has ever exploded from doing so. (Although they may have experienced
some pretty hearty belches.)
Think about it this way — if your mom tells you not to mix
Pop Rocks
and Coke, you would roll your eyes at her and tell her to stop being so
dramatic — there’s no way candy and soda could make you explode. That’s
crazy.
But if your best friend told you the same thing, you might be
inclined to believe her. You trust her because she’s always in the know.
Plus she wouldn’t risk her reputation by making up a whopper of a story
like that, right?
