Before you send an email, instant message, or other online communication, think about who will receive the message.

 

If you're emailing a friend, it's okay to use slang and informal language. If you're emailing someone like an employer, college admissions officer, or teacher, it's important to use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

 

No matter who you're interacting with online, avoid using too many exclamation points or capital letters. Using these too much makes it look like you're yelling.
