Using the Internet in a respectful and legal way involves respecting intellectual property and copyright.

Creations of the mind are intellectual property.  These include things like inventions, company names and logos, and artistic creations.

To protect their work, creators of intellectual property can copyright it.

Copyright protects works like art, stories, songs, movies, images, and text.

The creator owns a copyright as soon as the work is created. You can legally register a copyright to help protect it, but registration isn't required to own a copyright.

Sometimes, you may want to use works you found online that are protected by copyright.

You'll learn more about how to use copyrighted materials fairly next.
