Calculate Total Cost of Each Item

7th Grade Computer Literacy

First, you’ll create a formula that will calculate the total amount spent on items where more than one was purchased. If more than 1 item was purchased, to calculate the total you will need to multiply the cost of the item by the quantity. Follow the instructions below to enter a formula that will do the math for you.
  1. Click once in cell D3.
  2. Type the following formula =B3*C3 be very sure that you begin the formula with an =
  3. Press ENTER
  4. The result of the calculation is displayed in cell D3. It should be the result of cost x quantity for the first item on your list.
  5. Repeat the process for each item on your list. You may copy and paste the formula down Column D to save time.

You may be wondering why bother using  formula to do this?  When working with large numbers, it makes it incredibly easy to calculate expenses - especially if any of the numbers change.  Try this (required):

  1. Change any of the numbers you typed in Column C (if you typed a 1, change it to a 2 or 3)
  2. When you press ENTER after changing the number, look at the total in Column D next to it.  Did it automatically recalculate/change?  YES!  That's because you used a formula!
